Aged Persons Mental Health Inpatient Units

What we do

Our Inpatient Units provide assessment and treatment to older people during an acute phase of mental illness, until recovery enables them to be treated in a community-based setting. Many people admitted to our Inpatient Units, at least in the early stages of an admission, are under the care of the Mental Health Act 2014.

Our three Aged Persons Mental Health Inpatient Units service the needs of the north western catchment area of metropolitan Melbourne. Units are located in Bundoora, Broadmeadows and Sunshine with an Aged Psychiatric Assessment and Treatment Team (APATT) attached to each unit providing community follow up.

Our aim is to provide the best possible care to older people who are acutely unwell with a mental illness. We aim to provide care using a recovery-oriented approach. This means that our goal is to support people to:

"build and maintain a meaningful and satisfying life and personal identity, regardless of whether or not there are ongoing symptoms of mental illness". [Shepherd, Boardman & Slade 2008]

We provide the most appropriate mental health treatment and care in the least restrictive environment to the person needing it.
