Junior medical staff

We employ over 100 junior medical staff (or JMS), most of whom are local RANZCP registrars across all years of the psychiatry training program.

We employ medical staff at a senior and junior level across all our clinical services, to help provide excellent clinical care, research and training to our consumers and family/carers.

Within our clinical and support structures, our senior medical staff (consultants) work as clinical leaders in multidisciplinary teams and have the opportunity to be involved in a broad range of clinical, management and training opportunities, as well as research or other areas of interest.

Rotations

Our general rotations include positions within Acute Inpatient Units, Integrated Adult Community mental health teams and residential rehabilitation units (PARCs & CCUs) within the following services and Area Mental Health Services (AMHS):

  • Inner West Area Mental Health Service AMHS – based at Royal Melbourne Hospital and Waratah Clinic (Moonee Ponds)
  • MidWest AMHS – based at Western Hospital Sunshine and Harvester Clinic (Sunshine)
  • NorthWest AMHS – based at the Broadmeadows Health Service and Coburg
  • Northern AMHS – based at Northern Hospital and Southern Clinic (Preston)

The Orygen Youth Mental Health service and aged mental health services are also based in our area and have general and specialised positions for basic and advanced trainees.

Training

We offer a highly successful training program for psychiatry registrars, with a great choice of training experiences in both basic and advanced RANZCP training areas, plus many subspecialty areas.

We have well-established training and exam support for our trainees and we work hard to train accomplished psychiatrists, who have also had the opportunity to gain experience in areas of personal interest throughout their training years.

The training program at NWMH has outstanding success in preparing registrars for the college exams and has consistently achieved a high pass rate.

Support

We have highly experienced senior consultants specifically employed to help our registrars prepare for the RANZCP written and clinical exams through an extensive array of exam preparation tutorials tailored to each group. We also have close links to the University of Melbourne with the potential for research and teaching opportunities.

We pay considerable attention to ensuring that our registrars and Hospital Medical Officers (HMOs) are well supported. We have developed programs to ensure that our JMS feel able to get involved in improvement projects and provide feedback throughout their training, such at the NWMH JMS Partnership Group.

We also provide individualised support to each trainee through regular meetings with our director of training, plus support through JMS meetings, training opportunities and our broad network of consultants interested in JMS support and wellbeing. We also offer part-time and job-share opportunities for those with family commitments, other career interests and while undertaking research or other training.
