Professor Velakoulis receives prestigious neuropsychiatry award
Congratulations to Professor Dennis Velakoulis, who was presented the Ian Simpson Award by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists for his dedication to the clinical care and research of complex neuropsychiatric disorders.
Professor Velakoulis was appointed Director of the Neuropsychiatry Unit at The Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2001. Under his guidance, the unit evolved into a worldclass unit with an outstanding national and international clinical reputation.
A unique combination of clinical expertise and research has seen Professor Velakoulis provide valuable insight into the understanding of neuropsychiatric conditions, triggering new avenues of research.
Professor Velakoulis is the senior co-author for the Neuropsychiatry Unit Cognitive Screening tool, now validated in Malay, Spanish, Mandarin and Persian. This tool has been widely adopted within clinical settings in Australia, including psychiatry, geriatrics, neurology, and the rehabilitation of brain injury.
He has chaired the NorthWestern Mental Health Research and Ethics Committee and the NorthWestern Mental Health ECT Committee, held the position of Deputy Chair of the Victorian Psychosurgery Review Board and was Deputy Chair and Chair of the Section of Neuropsychiatry with RANZCP from 2006 to 2017.
Professor Velakoulis is highly respected by his colleagues and is a most worthy recipient of the Ian Simpson Award.
