Nursing at NorthWestern Mental Health (NWMH)

At NWMH Mental Health Nurses work across the full range of clinical and service settings geographically located across Northern and Western Metropolitan Melbourne areas. More specifically NWMH provides services through four Adult Area Mental Health Services; Aged Persons' Mental Health Services; and a Youth Mental Health Service named Orygen.

Our main service campuses are at Sunshine Hospital, Northern Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Footscray Hospital, Broadmeadows Health Service, Parkville and Bundoora Extended Care Centre.

Mental Health Nursing at NWMH is a specialised field of nursing which focuses on working with consumers to meet their recovery goals. The NWMH Mental Health Nursing model considers the persons' physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, within the context of the person's lived experience and in partnership with their family, significants others and the broader community.

In addition Mental Health nurses support consumers and their families during life crises and transition periods, they liaise discretely and effectively with a range of health care providers, provide information education on mental health maintenance and restoration, coordinate care and provide talking therapy.

Nurses play a significant role in the health care system and have the qualifications, skills and experience to provide high quality mental health nursing care in all contexts. The mental health nursing workforce is flexible and responsive and able to work with people across the life span, and in a variety of work place settings.

So what does it take to become the Melbourne's leading public provider of Mental Health services? Specialist expertise and first-class resources play their part of course. For example the NWMH Professional Unit lead by Professor Kim Foster produces evaluation and research related to Service priorities including Physical Health and Resilience Training to name a few.

But what really makes the different is the quality and commitment of our mental health nursing professionals who deliver our quality front line services and drive our exceptional standards of performance across our care programs.
