Why choose NorthWestern Mental Health?

Launch your career in Mental Health Nursing with NorthWestern Mental Health (NWMH), the largest provider of Mental Health Services in Victoria.

We provide services to people through four Adult Area Mental Health Services; three Aged Persons' Mental Health Services; and a Youth Mental Health Service Orygen.

Our campuses are at Sunshine Hospital, Northern Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Broadmeadows Health Service, EPPIC and Bundoora Extended Care Centre.

Sometimes size does matter!

Approximately 1700 people are employed by NorthWestern Mental Health to deliver a broad and integrated range of mental health services to young people, adults and the elderly with a serious mental illness. That means we have more expert clinicians and educators to support you.

Be a team member!

We might be big, but you will not be made to feel like the little fish. We know what it is like to be newly registered, newly employed and in a new field of health care like psychiatry. And that is why we look after you, because you are a member of a team.

About the Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program

56 weeks full time (80 hours/fortnight). Six weeks annual leave and one Accrued Day Off (ADO) per month.
Shift, weekend and public holiday penalty payments apply.

A full 6-day orientation and study block is provided before the clinical rotations commence.

Paid study days and supernumerary time are allocated throughout the program.

NorthWestern Mental Health is able to provide you with a clinically based, theoretical and experiential learning program in a supportive environment where clinicians and educators work together to ensure that your knowledge and skills are encouraged, valued and rewarded.

The course has been developed to provide a sound clinical and theoretical education and incorporates continuous competency-based assessment to promote the best possible clinical development.

Theory Component

The theory program consists of three units of study designed specifically to meet the needs of graduates entering the mental health field.

  • Models Supporting Psychiatric Care
  • Psychopathology and Interventions
  • Assessment, Interviewing and Therapeutic Skills

The theory is delivered in study blocks, study days and workshops throughout the program. All while you get paid!

We encourage and support continuing education so NorthWestern Mental Health is accredited with the University of Melbourne for credit towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Practice.

Clinical Component

Three clinical rotations are provided, a minimum of one in acute adult inpatient services. NorthWestern Mental Health can provide clinical experience in residential rehabilitation, acute adult, youth and aged psychiatry settings.

Applicants are invited to nominate their preferences for the rotations provided by NWMH (see Application Kit).
